Body Image Issues
Body image refers to how we perceive our physical appearance. Individuals who have a negative body image have a distorted and unrealistic view of their own body. Unfortunately many yound grils and women are dissatisfied with their bodies and how they look. This dissatisfaction can turn into excessive mental preoccupation with how they look and percieved flaws. This can casue an individual to take extreme measures to alter their appearance. Body image disorders include body dysmorphic disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating.
Negative body image can result in being unhappy with ourselves and lading to depression, anxiety and feelings of unworthiness.
Some signs of having a negative body image:
- Difficulty accepting and believing the truthfullness of a compliment
- Constantly comparing yourself to others
- Having negative self talk when describing yourself or referring to yourself
- Mental preoccupations about how you look
- Feelings of shame and embarrassment about certain body parts
- Mood fluctuations based on how you look on each given day
